Description:

This document describes how you can configure multi-gateway load balancing with LANCOM routers that are operated in a VRRP network.

With this functionality, the network clients choose which DHCP response they respond to, although statistically these are evenly distributed across all physical routers.

In case of a physical router failure, the other router acts as a backup for the virtual MAC address so that all network clients can continue to use the Internet.

Requirements:

Scenario:

In this scenario, two LANCOM routers have already been combined into a VRRP network.

  • Each LANCOM router has its own Internet connection.
  • The two LANCOM routers are located in the same local network with the address range 10.0.0.0/24.
  • The two WAN connections are to be used in load-balancing operation.

Procedure:

In this scenario, you must always create as many virtual routers in the configuration of the physical routers as there are physical routers. In this example, two physical routers are used, so two virtual routers must also be created on each device.

1. Open the configuration of the first physical router in LANconfig and switch to the menu IP Router → VRRP.

2. Activate the option Propose internal services on the virtual IPs.

3. Create two virtual routers in the VRRP list and ensure that one router is given a higher main priority (see the following figure).

4. The WAN connection is selected as the remote site in each case.

5. Write the configuration back into the device.

6. Open the configuration of the second physical router in LANconfig and switch to the menu IP Router → VRRP.

7. Activate the option Propose internal services on the virtual IPs.

8. Create two virtual routers in the VRRP list again and make sure that the virtual router to which you assigned the higher main priority on the first physical router is now assigned the lower main priority (see the following figure).

9. The WAN connection is selected as the remote site.

10. Write the configuration back to the device.

11. In the configuration of both physical routers, you must now activate the DHCP server in the menu IPv4 → DHCPv4 → DHCP networks and select the option DHCP cluster.

12. Then write the configuration back into the respective device.

13. The configuration is now complete.
