Description:

This article describes how a fiber optic connection can be set up on a LANCOM router (with user credentials, fixed IP parameters or IP address allocation via DHCP).

Requirements:

  • LCOS as of version 10.42 (download latest version)
  • LANtools as of version 10.42 (download latest version)
  • The router is either connected via a converter from fiber optic to Ethernet or the router is connected directly via an SFP module

Procedure:

Check the information from your Internet provider on how to configure the connection and select the appropriate access type.

Fiber optic connection with user credentials:

Set up a PPPoE connection on the router as described in the following Knowledge Base article:

Setting up a VDSL connection for LANCOM routers without an integrated VDSL modem

Fiber optic connection with fixed IP parameters:

Set up an IPoE connection on the router as described in the following Knowledge Base article:

Setting up Internet access via an IPoE (plain Ethernet) connection

Uncheck the checkbox Obtain IP parameters automatically from the DHCP server in step 9 and enter the IP parameters manually (see Info box).

For an IPoE connection the LANCOM router only sees the connection to the upstream router. In order for the LANCOM router to recognize an outage of the Internet connection, an ICMP polling to one or multiple IP addresses has to be configured. The procedure is described in the following Knowledge Base article:

Mechanisms for monitoring lines and connections on LANCOM products

Fiber optic connection with IP address allocation via DHCP:

Set up a DHCPoE connection on the router as described in the following Knowledge Base article:

Setting up Internet access via an IPoE (plain Ethernet) connection

Leave the checkbox Obtain IP parameters automatically from the DHCP server in step 9 active, so that the router obtains its IP parameters via DHCP.

For an IPoE connection the LANCOM router only sees the connection to the upstream router. In order for the LANCOM router to recognize an outage of the Internet connection, an ICMP polling to one or multiple IP addresses has to be configured. The procedure is described in the following Knowledge Base article:
